Dreams Emerging, Beyond Resilience: Dia de los Muertos (2021)

I was commissioned by SOMArts to design the publicity for their annual dia de los muertos Exhibition, “Dreams Emerging, Beyond Resilience: Dia de los Muertos 2021”. I worked closely with SOMArts’ staff to create a visual that reflected the exhibition’s theme, a reflection on how last year has transformed our collective visions of connection, freedom, and healing. Asking artists to to create work that embodies dreams of the world in which they want to live.

Inspired by the exhibition theme, I used symbolism such as intergenerational guidance in the constellation of the Big Dipper, resistance against settler colonialism through the olive branches, the increased intimacy of human connection to keep moving in the two Women, and a juxtaposition of desire for rain after fire and growth after destruction in their shawls.

Using this illustration, I designed an instagram post used to advertise the event.

I also designed web banners that were used to advertise the event on SOMArts’ website and facebook page.

As well as a poster, sized at 24" x 36", that was placed on a sandwich board at the entrance to the exhibition.
